Harry Lauder’s Walkingstick
BETULACEAE, The Birch family
This is one of 10 planters for the Yard, Garden and Patio show at Portland Convention Center this weekend. The pot is from Aw in Seattle, a company with kilns in China and Vietnam. They make some of the most beautiful planters around. I found the gold metallic balls and Mexican terra-cotta ball at Cost Plus World Market.
The little tree is just starting to bloom. The light green hanging catkins are chains of male flowers. The female flowers are amazing- they look like slim little buds, but they have a naughty-looking bright pink tassel coming out of the tip.
In the built up soil around the tree I planted several kinds of sedum and hen and chicks, Oxalis ‘Dark Dancer’, cranberries to trail over the edges, dwarf mondo grass, Raoulia (scabwort), and dwarf creeping thyme. Any spaces between plants have little pebbles. Hooray, I love it!!
