Picea pungens ‘Hoopsii’

Blue spruce ‘Hoopsii’
PINACEAE, The Pine family

This is one of the bluest blue spruces. It’s a fast grower to 30-50 feet tall, and 10 feet wide. In 10 years it can reach around 6 feet. Other nice blue conifers include Juniper ‘Wichita’, Juniper ‘Blue Arrow’, and Sawara cypress ‘Baby Blue’.

I have had several clients reject blue conifers, and then got one couple that loooved them, just to disprove all my theories about west cost people’s tastes. The clients that balked at the blueness, however, reconsidered when they saw all the plants in their design together and had time to get a sense of the overall logic of the design: it’s more than a sum of its parts.
