Corokia cotoneaster

Wire netting plant
A very unusual looking evergreen shrub, Corokia cotoneaster has thin, zig-zag pattern branches with small dark grey-green leaves. In late summer it has many fragrant, star-shaped yellow flowers followed by small red berries. It is native to New Zealand and is in the Dogwood family, Cornaceae. It’s hardy to zone 7.

I saw this plant today as a potted shrub in the nursery yard and as a small bonsai in the greenhouse. At first glance it’s hard to know if it is in leaf, or even alive. This would be a great fine textured accent for a really architectural garden.
